The Facts about Urinary Incontinence....

Step 1

What causes Urinary Incontinence (UI)?

UI can affect men and women at any age, and it can be caused by many physical conditions.  Many causes are temporary and can be managed with simple treatment. Some causes of temporary incontinence are:

  1. Constipation

  2. Urinary tract or vaginal infection

  3. Difficulty with walking or getting around

  4. Effects of medications

UI can be caused by other conditions that are not temporary:

  1. Weakness of muscles that hold the bladder in place

  2. Weakness of the bladder, itself

  3. Overactive bladder muscle

  4. Blocked urethra (can be from prostate enlargement)

  5. Hormone imbalance in women (estrogen loss during or after menopause

  6. Neurological disorders

  7. Immobility

In almost every case, the conditions listed above can be treated.
