The Facts about Falls Risk....

Risk 3

Walking Problems

Many studies have determined that difficulties with walking result in an increased risk for falls. But sometimes, walking problems are not so obvious.  For example, a person may be able to walk around the house without using a cane or walker. However, studies have shown that if it takes a person more than 30 seconds to walk 20 feet, he or she may have a high risk for falling*.

It is important to wear proper shoes that fit correctly and fully support your feet whenever you are walking. Also, if the doctor recommends that you use a cane or walker, a physical therapist should determine if it fits you correctly and that you know how to use it safely.
