The Facts about Dementia....

Treatment for Dementia

If you or a loved one are worried about memory problems, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. Even if a doctor diagnoses an irreversible form of dementia, much can be done in terms of treatment and support for patients and their caregivers.

Advice for Today

There are medications available, and scientists are working to develop new treatments that may someday help reverse or prevent the damage caused by dementia related illnesses. In the meantime, here are a few suggestions to try to keep memory sharp:

  1. Do 30 minutes of physical activity a day.

  2. Do 30 minutes of social activity a day.

  3. Do 30 minutes of cognitive activity a day. For example, crossword puzzles or word-finding games.

  4. Limit the use of alcoholic beverages.

  5. Plan tasks or make a "to do" list.  Use notes, calendars, and other memory aids.  It is easier to remember something if you can connect it to another meaningful thing, such as a familiar name, song, or lines from a poem.

  6. Ask your physician for a referral to the LifeAssessSM Program at Holy Redeemer.

Stress, anxiety, or depression can make you more forgetful.  Forgetfulness caused by these emotions is usually temporary.  If these feelings last a long period of time, it is important to seek help from a professional.
